1) Avoid the dump station at the campgrounds which I've waited in an hour long line before
2) Thoroughly clean the tanks at home where no one is waiting for me
3) Empty the tanks without moving the camper while camping
I've been able to use the pump successfully for #1 and #2 and I plan on getting a tank to achieve goal #3.
Pros:
- The pump is FAST. I can empty both my gray and black tanks totaling around 70 gallons in less than 5 minutes.
- It pumps easily through a 50' long 5/8" hose up about 4 feet to a toilet just inside the house from my garage
- It's reasonably quiet while pumping and makes quite a bit more noise when the tank is empty making it easy to determine while it's finished pumping
- The flusher connection is very convenient for filling and flushing the tanks repeatedly.
- The push button on/off switch seems to be very high quality.
- The pump forms a very solid seal with the sewer hookup on the camper and doesn't leak whatsoever.
- It comes with an extra o-ring in case the one included on the pump wears out or is lost.
Cons:
- The wiring harness needs to be assembled and doesn't come with any clamps or hook-ups. I bought some 30A alligator clips (from Amazon) and 100' of 12A wire (from eBay) and soldered them to the connections that come with the pump. This was easy enough for me but I'd imagine someone that doesn't have familiarity with electrical connections might find it annoying. Make sure that you get at least 12 gauge wire since this pump pulls a lot of current. The first time I used it, I had some 16 gauge wire laying around that I used and it ended up melting the wire near the inline fuse. Once all of this was assembled, I'm able to connect the pump to the battery on the camper and everything works great.
The pump did start to have a drip after about 10 months of use. It did come with a spare O ring, that we could change out, but we are waiting until we feel it is a must. Once you open things up, they are usually never the same as factory. We pump every week to every other week.
Update 8-21-17. I have used this pump about 9 times now and I am having the same trouble with it that I was having initially it continues to blow fuses (like 10-11 times during a pump) . I bought a resettable 20a fuse from eBay to deal with this and I let it cool down for 5 or so minutes each time. I am going to leave the review at 5 stars because of the superior feel of the pump quality and it did save me when I really could think of no other option... I believe it would pump grey water without blowing any fuses at all.
Top reviews from other countries
Using a 75’ 3/4” hose to pump over level ground... no issues. Pump gets hot when tanks are full and I do lots of black tank flushing .... so sometimes take a break between black and grey tank to avoid over heating. No idea if the pump is at risk of heat damage ... but I’m not taking risks when pumping black tanks :).
Seems to manage all the chunks and TP ... makes some interesting noises when grinding. We even had a visitor using regular (vs RV TP) before we straightened them out ... and the pump did fine.
Considered the cheaper ‘off brand’ unit ... but decided pumping black tanks was not the time to save money. I shutter to think what it will involve if we have a clog or break down.
I use a clear elbow to monitor flow and find it very helpful to understand what is going.
Be aware that the wires terminate as wire ends and are not very long. Won’t reach the RV battery on the tongue. I pam currently use a stand alone 12v battery to power it with the leads under a screw terminal post. ... I think in the long term I will add a 12v outlet near the dump valves.
Highly recommended!
5/8 hose, 25 ft, 3/4 inch hose 50 feet.
Now having shared this, it is important to ensure that you also have a few extra Fuses available for the handheld starter button. If you find that you are pumping too far, the unit will over-heat and shut off, reset itself internally and then can be turned back on.
I have had no issues learning the limitations and working with the Unit as specified by the manufacturer, yet I pump almost 68 feet with a 3/4 inch hose and the unit works great. I did start of with a 5/8 hose at 100 feet, that was challenging to have the unit turn off and on. I then went to a 3/4 Hose, cut the hose down to the actual distance I needed and NOT any ADDITIONAL length, why pump waste through extra hose line? Just cut it off at the length required and that stopped any issues with over-heating and fuses.
I would recommend a 3/4 inch line and not to waste your time on a smaller 5/8 hose unless it is specifically for grey water or galley water. The pump works smoother and easier and less hot with the large hose and you can easily hear the sound of the pump with the 3/4 inch hose running not as loud and or labored.
However, as others have noted, the tabs that lock the unit to the sewer outlet fitting are a serious liability. First, the tabs are poorly fitted for the standard design. They are extremely tight, at least on our trailer setup, and if used as supplied would have had a high likelihood of snapping off, leaving us with a non functional pump.
Second, the plastic used for the adapter housing is, in my opinion, not fit for purpose. There is no way that the tabs should be as vulnerable to breaking off as they appear to be.
The tight fit can be solved by careful filing of the tabs to loosen the fit, but the basic issue of breakable tabs still remains if this is all you do. What I did to solve both problems was to permanently install a clear polycarbonate extension to the pump body, encasing the joint in thickened epoxy over wrapped with glass cloth and epoxy. This supports the vulnerable tabs so they cannot be broken, and also allows me to observe what is being pumped out of our tanks. With this modification, I highly recommend the pump as an alternative to the stinky slinky option.
Without this modification to deal with the vulnerable tabs, I doubt I would choose the pump over the slinky.
